'BORDER : DAY ONE', a story of boys on the border of two opposite worlds
Debut song "GIVEn-Taken" reflects the boys' worries and ambitions as they head toward a new world
ENHYPEN will release their debut album 'BORDER : DAY ONE' on November 30th. The emergence of a 'superstar rookie' that has never been seen in the history of K-pop is causing a tectonic shift in the music industry.
ENHYPEN is a boy group under Billiepop, a joint venture between CJ ENM and Big Hit Entertainment, and consists of seven multinational members: Jungwon, HeeSeung, J, Jake, SungHoon, Sunwoo, and Nicky. They are the final surviving members of Mnet's global idol project "I-LAND," which aired for about three months starting last June, and showed the group's growth as individuals and as a team through numerous missions based on unlimited possibilities.
As of its conclusion, "I-LAND" had amassed a staggering 43 million cumulatIVE online lIVE viewers, 186 million digital clip views, and 181 countries and regions voting for the show, heralding the emergence of a truly global fan-made group.
The team name "ENHYPEN" refers to the "hyphen" in the name of the seven boys, who come from different backgrounds and have lIVEd different lIVEs, "connecting" to "discover" each other and "growing" together. It also contains the ambition to connect people to people and world to world through music.
After a long journey and sTANding on a new boundary as a debut, the seven boys boldly took a shot at the 'throne'. Armed with music that will resonate with contemporary stories and powerful performances, they herald the birth of 'the most promising newcomers in 2020'.
'BORDER : DAY ONE', the story of boys on the border
ENHYPEN tells the story of boys on the border through 'BORDER : DAY ONE'.
Seven boys who have survIVEd and are about to make their debut in 'I-LAND', a space of competition, harmony, and growth, begin their long journey as the sun rises on their first day in a new world. As the boys begin to step out from the boundary between the past and the future, from preparatory students who saw potential to a rookie idol group who realized their dreams, and from scattered individuals to a team, they feel both the joy of survival and the anxiety of the unknown future.
The stories and complex emotions that the boys face as they connect, discover, and grow together on the edge of the unknown, and their strong will to overcome them, are expressed in the visual concept of two versions of DAWN and DUSK, which are on the border of day and night.
The album begins with 'Intro : Walk the Line', the title track, 'GIVEn-Taken', 'Let Me In (20 CUBE)', a song about the longing for a new world of longing and the space of a loved one, '10 Months', which compares the exciting but clumsy moment of love to a 10-month-old puppy, 'Flicker', which signals to the other person and connects the worlds together, and 'Outro: Cross the Line', which concludes the first day and anticipates ENHYPEN's next step in crossing the line.
'GIVEn or Taken', the title track that reflects the boys' troubles and strong aspirations
'GIVEn-Taken', the title track of the debut album, is a song in the POP Hip hop genre. It captures the complex emotions that the seven members have at a new starting point after surviving a long journey and teaming up under the name ENHYPEN. The dark yet powerful energy of "GIVEn-Taken" expresses the members' deep concern about whether the realization of their dream of a spectacular debut was gIVEn to them or taken from them, and their ambitious ambition to "turn the world upside down and step into the sky. The conflicting emotions of the members, who are happy to be in the spotlight upon their debut, but also feel anxious about the new world and desperate to survIVE, are expressed through the delicate melody of the verses and the strong drum and bass sound of the chorus.
In addition, the energetic performance captures the process of connecting, discovering, and growing together and their ambitious ambitions for a new world. On the first day, the choreography begins with the opening of the eyes to the world, followed by a slow-motion military dance that shows ENHYPEN as a team becoming one giant engine as if starting up, finally shooting arrows into the world, and then taking a big step forward. The powerful, uninterrupted choreography is complemented by delicate, understated movements and facial expressions to convey the complex emotions of the boys on the edge.
Different from the start! ENHYPEN, one of the hottest new talents in K-pop history
ENHYPEN is the first boy group to be presented by BillyFrap. The seven members' talents and colorful charms, proven through Mnet's "I-LAND," and the tight teamwork they've developed through numerous missions, have garnered the attention of fans around the world since their debut.
The music was produced by a legion of big-hit super producers, including Wonderkid, Bang Si Hyuk ("hitman" bang), and FRANTS. Starting with the title track in the POP Hip hop genre, where you can feel the dark yet powerful energy, ENHYPEN interpreted various genres such as AlternatIVE Hip hop, Reggae, Pop, and Pop R&B in their own style.
As the countdown to their debut begins in earnest, ENHYPEN has been teasing fans around the world with a variety of content, including debut trailers, concept mood BoArds, concept photos, and intro lyric videos. The first two trailers, "Choose-Chosen" and "Dusk-Dawn," feature cinematic visuals and intriguing stories. The first trailer shows ENHYPEN in a forest at dawn, with images of roses, candles, and the moon intercut with antonyms such as 'Trainee-Artist', 'Failure-Success', 'Given-Taken', 'Blood-Light', 'Us-the Others', and 'Mortal-Immortal'. The second trailer shows the seven members of ENHYPEN in a static, scattered state, finally coming together to form a complete unit, gazing up at the dawn sky.
The two versions of the concept photos capture the boys on the edge, their longing for the "throne" and their emergence into a new world. The members' visuals, combined with the classic mood outfits, created an overwhelming atmosphere and showed off their boyishness, longing for freedom.
The music video for the title track "GIVEn-Taken" catches the eye with its sensual and intense visuals. As ENHYPEN rushes toward a tower of light at the end of the desert to find their identity as a team, the members' delicate emotional performances and energetic performances add to the dramatic tension. The overwhelming scale of the backdrop, including the desert tower, and the colorful styling that changes with it, provide a rich spectacle.
With the charm and talent of the members proven through "I-LAND," the artist production know-how of BIGHIT Entertainment, which has produced a string of "Rookie of the Year" artists in their debut year, including BTS and 2NE1, and a global fanbase that has exploded on major social media platforms and amassed over a million followers each before their debut, ENHYPEN is set to be the next "most anticipated rookie in K-pop history" from the get-go.
[Tracklist]
1. Intro : Walk the Line
This song is an alternatIVE hip hop genre that opens a new world for ENHYPEN. The boys who survIVEd 'I-LAND' sang about the feelings of "pain turning into joy" as they step out of the boundary to enter their dream world. The marching drum that signals the beginning of the song, the harmony of the synthesizer that expresses the feeling of a faint dawn, the narration that expresses the determination, and the query "Camminare sulla linea," which means "Walk the Line" in Italian, maximize the overwhelming emotions.
2. GIVEn-Taken
The album's title track. It is a song in the POP Hip hop genre with a dark yet powerful energy, and was produced by Wonderkid and Bang Si Hyuk ("hitman" bang) of Big Hit. It tells the story of the complex emotions of seven boys who are at a new starting point after fulfilling their dream of 'debut' after a long journey. The film explores the question of whether a spectacular debut is something that is gIVEn to the members or something that they have taken for themselves and their strong will to overcome it. The conflicting emotions of the boys, represented by lyrics such as "The boundary line inside me facing the arrow of fate in the rain," are expressed with a delicate melody and a strong drum and bass sound in the chorus.
3. Let Me In (20 CUBE)
This song is a hip-hop-influenced take on the reggae genre, representing a 20㎤ cube fish TANk as a new world. It tells the story of boys who want to enter a new world of longing with the excitement of asking their loved ones to let them into their space. Produced by big-hit producers FRANTS and Bang Si Hyuk ("hitman" bang), the song features electric guitar, brass, and piano along with the members' charming voices to create a lighthearted energy.
4. 10 Months
A POP genre song with a sophisticated melody line. The cute figure of a 10-month-old puppy whimpering while being treated like a child by the person he loves is compared to the figure of a 10-month-old puppy. Like a 10-month-old puppy who has grown up but is still young, the song talks about the love of a boy who is still clumsy at everything. He wants to protect his lover and gIVE him a shoulder to lean on, but he portrays his frustration with the other person who 'doesn't know my heart and only laughs at me' with cute and adorable lyrics. The refreshing EP (electric piano) sound and the sweet voices of the members add to the loveliness of the song.
5. Flicker
This song is in the Pop R&B genre and tells the story of sending a signal that only the two of you can understand to the person you've been looking for every day. It was first released as a mission song for the 'chemistry test' in 'I-LAND'. It reflects ENHYPEN's identity of connecting, discovering, and growing together, as seen in the lyrics of "connecting the worlds that were disconnected" after realizing that they had a connection for the first time. The addictive rhythmic melody line, unique electric guitar riffs, and groovy drum & bass combine to create a sophisticated and dreamy feel.
6. Outro : Cross the Line
A waltz-like piece with a vintage sound and a carnival feel. The narration, which talks about the hope of a dreamlike tomorrow, and the innocent children's quirkiness are added to create a spooky yet beautiful feeling. The grotesque string sound in the second half of the song heightens the mood and adds to the curiosity of ENHYPEN's next step in 'crossing the line'.
