NCT is a 20-member multinational boy group under SM Entertainment. In practice, the entire group rarely participates in a single song, with activities centered around individual subgroups and NCT U.

NCT 127 is the first region-based team based in South Korea, and WayV debuted in 2019, based in Greater China.

Within NCT, there are regionally based teams with a fixed membership and federated teams with a variable and open membership. NCT U became the only alliance team in NCT when NCT DREAM, which debuted as an alliance team, became a fixed team.

As of 2023, NCT has released more than 30 albums, including those by subgroups, and in January 2023, they released their fourth studio album repackage, Ay-Yo.

Ay-Yo sold nearly one million copies within a week of its release, ranking as the 20th best-selling album by a boy group of all time, and ABC News in the United States said that NCT 127 should be recognized as the inventors of the new genre neo-chill hop.
